Claws, A Hebridean Mystery                              BY MICHAEL J WEAVER (AKA MIKE)

Picture
Claws is a grown-up children's story, or a children's story for grown ups. The tale is all based on a bedtime story I used to tell my children when they were small, inspired by a picture which hung on my bedroom wall. It's still there today! So here's the plot...

Iona is a shy, bright nine year old girl with few friends and a father who has become over protective since the death of his wife. The enigmatic Hamish is an old fisherman who lives alone on a small island in the loch - with just a feisty and mischievous terrier called Vorrey for company.

The isles of Inishmae have a reputation for strange goings on - and when lobsters which Hamish has sold to Inishmae’s celebrated restaurant attack its famous chef, a series of bizarre and mysterious events begin.

All this is no surprise to Iona - who has been hearing and seeing weird things herself.  But why do the shellfish start to disappear? Sabotage? Who is the strange oriental cyclist holidaying on the islands - and is Hamish’s incredible tale true or just an ancient mariner’s yarn?

The way of life for the islanders is under serious threat - yet the key to their future lies within the secrets of the past. It is down to a young girl and an old man to help unlock them.

The book inspired Mike to write three songs - 'Gather I Must,' 'Return to Inishmae' and 'Never Let Me Go' will all be featured in the film score - if Hollywood ever comes knocking!
